Health and Wellness programs that have been co-sponsored or supported by the 100 have been designed to (i) raise the awareness level about health care issues and how they impact the African American community, (ii) educate members of the community of the need to "Know their Numbers" and (iii) enable members of the community to receive free testing for items such as diabetes, cholesterol, and body mass index. Health and Wellness programs that we have supported in recent years (and will continue to support) include:
African American Male and Family Wellness Walk
Free Prostate Cancer Screening (OSU James Cancer Hospital)
OSU Minority Male Health Conference
With the help of our local partners, the 100 will be able to go into the community and begin to dialog about health and wellness issues with those that need it most. The importance of these types of Health and Wellness events is highlighted by the following, alarming statistics relating to African American men's health:
African American Men live 7.5 years less than other ethnic groups
African American Men are more likely to suffer from prostrate cancer and are most likely to have severe cases prostrate cancer (largerly due to lack of proactive testing)
African American Men are 5 times more likely to die of HIV/AIDS
African American Men are 4 times as likely to suffer from kidney failure
African American Men have higher incidence of diabetes
40% of African American Men die prematurely from cardiovascular disease as compared to 22% of Caucasian Men
